Abstract

This study aims to explain the meaning of hijab in the Qur’an comprehensively through thematic (maudhu‘i) and analytical (tahlili) approaches. In modern society, the phenomenon of hijab has undergone significant transformation, shifting from a religious obligation to a form of cultural identity and fashion trend. This development often generates confusion in understanding terms such as hijab, jilbab, and khimar, as well as differences of scholarly opinion regarding the limits of women’s aurat. Therefore, a comprehensive study is required to clarify these concepts based on Qur’anic guidance. This research compiles relevant verses, namely Q. Al-A‘raf: 26, Q. An-Nur: 30–31, Q. Al-Ahzab: 53, and Q. Al-Ahzab: 59, which are then examined in detail using the tahlili method by analyzing their context, key vocabulary, asbab al-nuzul, munasabah, and interpretations of classical and contemporary exegetes. The findings reveal that hijab in the Qur’an does not merely signify clothing that covers the body, but represents a system of moral, social, and spiritual protection. Hijab functions to preserve dignity, regulate ethical interaction, and protect women from harm. Thus, this study offers a more holistic understanding that hijab transcends its physical dimension, encompassing values of modesty, personal identity, and piety. This study is expected to serve as a relevant academic reference in addressing the evolving interpretations of hijab in contemporary Muslim societies.
